About Our Team

Specialized Clinicians & Fellow Travelers

Professionally, we’re a group of doctoral-level practitioners and advanced clinicians-in-training who specialize in  depth-oriented, integrative trauma therapy. Personally, we’re fellow travelers. We are first and foremost humans  who, just like our clients, are navigating the ebb and flow of life with all its highs and lows. We bring both our  clinical expertise and our human energy to every therapy session, because we know how important and  meaningful it is to be cared for and understood – not just psychologically, but relationally.

The Story Behind Healing Phoenix

Why Our Practice Exists

Healing Phoenix Psychology was born out of a deeply personal journey. Dr. Adam McDonald, founder and clinical  director of the practice, is a Licensed Psychologist with a PhD in Counseling Psychology. He founded the Healing  Phoenix Psychology clinic in honor of his late brother, who went by the name Phoenix at the end of his life.

Phoenix was a survivor of complex developmental trauma who spent years seeking help from many professionals,  yet despite the years of treatment, his underlying trauma remained unresolved. Tragically, Phoenix died by suicide  just three weeks into Dr. Adam’s PhD training.

Our Vision—Transforming the Unseen Wounds

Because of this personal and professional journey, Dr. Adam understands how developmental wounds can shape  someone’s entire psychology and worldview and even alter their nervous system in ways that are often unseen by  the outside world. He believes that mindful-somatic trauma therapy—backed by the latest trauma and  neuroscience research—can help heal the invisible wounds that impact both the mind and body.

At Healing Phoenix Psychology, Dr. Adam and our entire clinical team will never see you as just another number.  We see you as a whole person, and we will work collaboratively with you to help your nervous system experience  safety and healing. We are fiercely committed to helping you reclaim your internal peace and improve your quality  of life.

The Meaning of the Phoenix

The name of our clinic is more than a tribute; it is a reflection of the journey we take with our clients. Like the  mythological bird rising from the ashes, we believe that profound transformation is possible after devastation. But  the ultimate goal of our work is not just individual recovery. We believe that as you do the brave work of  untangling your past and finding your authentic voice, you become a “healing phoenix” yourself—a person who  not only experiences healing, but naturally becomes a force that brings restoration to the world around you.

Our Approach to Mental Health Care & Trauma Therapy

We see you as a person. Not a problem to be solved. Our process is nuanced, depth-oriented, and rooted in the belief that the human experience is profoundly complex. Not every trauma informed modality is going to be ideal for every client, and that’s why our style is integrative and client-centered.

Every session and every client is unique, and we take a whole person approach to trauma therapy that respects your own inner wisdom and lived experiences. Our shared goal is to help you gain clarity and the internal stability you need to navigate your life and   the world in an empowered and authentic way.

What we believe

Meaningful change must be experienced in the body, not just understood in the mind.

We will explore how and why your survival patterns emerged and honor the ways you learned to adapt. But  we won’t stop at simply understanding those coping strategies. Through mindful, somatic processing, we help  you move beyond simply understanding your experiences to experiencing understanding as a lived, embodied reality.

Healing happens through integration, not insight alone.

We help you connect mental clarity with embodied awareness by helping your nervous system develop the  stability needed for healing and post-traumatic growth. Through mindful integration techniques, we help our  clients navigate life with greater peace and self-trust.

There’s room for joy and laughter in the recovery experience.

Psychology is serious work, but when appropriate, we welcome the healing power of joy into the therapeutic experience. Respectful playfulness and intentional humor can be incredibly valuable in a therapeutic context.  ‘Play’ is one of the primary ways children communicate and make sense of the world, and we believe we are  all children at heart.

Empowerment and authenticity are essential for post-traumatic growth.

In tense relational moments, it’s easy to default into old survival patterns and adaptive strategies, which is  why we focus on therapeutic integration, particularly in relational contexts. Using experiential techniques, we  empower our clients to communicate and connect in authentic ways, even in intense or triggering moments.
